[Quick Storyline Recap] The Mystic Nine Ep. 13-16

10

New post because this episode had a lot of fun moments for our OTP. Unlike the first twelve episodes, these four are a lot more dense in content. The ending especially shocked me. I tried to put more details into this recap.

Drama highlights recap:

Let’s back track a bit from the last post.

Episode 13 starts off with the two fiances fighting to show their values and that they are the worthy groom-to-be. Xinyue and Ba Ye help Fu Ye by yelling and creating noises to destroy the concentration of the fiance, which made him mad. Hence, they restart the fight over without hiding their view.

8

This time still, Fu Ye wins and gains the medicine. Xinyue is amazed at the prowess of Fu Ye and decides he is the one she wants to marry.

55

56

49

Hence, Xinyue decides to leave with them and escort them to the train station.

10

On the train, Xinyue cutely introduces herself as his wife which surprises both Er Ye and Ya Tou. Reading the mood, Er Ye and Ya Tou encourage the two of them to start a relationship. Fu Ye tries to shut Xinyue by giving her a bracelet we learn later is a valuable belonging of Fu Ye: if someone hits it, it will resonate twice.

51205

During a two-by-two conversation, Er Ye encourages Fu Ye to accept the feelings of Xinyue because a two-person life is way less boring. Plus, they are quite compatible. At this, Fu Ye says that he thinks Er Ye and him are an even better match. 😉 They laugh at that.

10 11

In the meantime, the mad fiance who got refused the hand of Xinyue is plotting his revenge by allieting with the Japanese people. He comes on the train and sees Xinyue and kidnapps her. Thanks to the bracelet, Fu Ye realizes her situation and goes to save her. Starts a long battle of Fu Ye with a huge group of people (20-30 people?) in the wagon while the horrible and hateful fiance tries to take advantage of Xinyue (aka trying to rape her). After a long time of fighting, Fu Ye arrives to the room where the rapist is having some difficulty facing our lady. Fu Ye saves Xinyue and they have a quick romantic moment in the air. Fu Ye is mad and decides to not leave any chance to the fiance: he kills him.

33

Later, when they are at his house, Xinyue makes the maids call her House Lady (aka wife of Fu Ye). Her quote “叫什么小姐,叫我夫人” is trending on weibo now! She even dared to touch/slap his cheeks (in a friendly way of course), which left our all mighty Fu Ye in disbelief.

9

10

However, as he looks at Xinyue leave the room, he smiles happily!

11

On another side of the world, Ya Tou started eating the medicine everyday… to sadly no effect. She tries to hide this information from her husband Er Ye, but the visiting Jiu Ye (9th Master) notices right away. Ya Tou makes him promise to not reveal this crucious information because she knows how hard everyone worked to get this medicine. Jiu Ye reluctantly accepts, but tells her that if ever Er Ye sees her die, he will probably lose all will to live. FYI, the medicine probably doesn’t work because her illness is at a very late stage.

Xinyue is chilling at the house of Fu Ye, finding everything a lot poorer and boring than expected. Especially since Fu Ye didn’t come back home for two days. Xinyue decides to go to his office to explore and maybe give him a surprise when he comes back. There, she notices a secret passage to his attic. There, as she explores, she gets caught in a net trap. She has to wait for Fu Ye to get back home…

13

As Fu Ye gets back home, he wonder about Fu Ren’s wheabout (Fu Ren=wife, woman of the house). Servants tell him she is on the second floor so he goes check out for himself.. only to see his attic’s door open and Xinyue trapped. He takes his time to reprimend her before letting her down, telling her to not move much or other traps will start taking effect too. Xinyue doesn’t listen and tries to get out herself, only to set the other traps in motion. Fu Ye jumps to her rescue and gets a bit hurt in the process. Xinyue says thanks and that these traps are really well down! As Fu Ye leaves, she notices that the rust on the spires that hurt Fu Ye.

25

When it is supper time, Xinyue goes down to eat only to be told that she can’t start eating unless Fu Ye arrives. Hearing this, she is first annoyed. She then gives it a second thought and considering how many times Fu Ye saved her, she decided to be nicer to him. She goes up to find him.

9

Now, girls, you ready?? Fu Ye was actually healing his wounds, showing his upper body to the camera!

5 6

Xinyue is first shy by this view, but then, sees that his wound is still open. She goes to him to nurse him. They however gets into a fight as Fu Ye once again ask her to leave.

42

Fu Ye in deep thinking (probably another filler scene to look cool). Couldn’t resist adding these pics here! 😀

21 35

The next day, Xinyue goes to visit Ya Tou who is still sick in bed. Fu Ye wakes up later and wonder where she went. His servants tell him she went to Er Ye’s house.

At Er Ye’s house, Er Ye is happy to see that his wife seems to be getting better and that Xinyue’s arrival is making her even more lively.

20

They chat together and Ya Tou makes a noodle soup dish for Xinyue. Xinyue notices that the dish was wrongly made (putting soy milk instead of vinegar or something like that…), but still lies by saying it was delicious!

13

12

At that moment, Fu Ye and Jiu Ye arrives. Xinyue decides to hide. Although we may assume Fu Ye came to pick his wife back ;), he is actually here to talk with Ya Tou. Ya You realizes that she doesn’t have many days to live anymore. She wants to give back the medicine to Fu Ye. The three of them come up with a plan. They will make it look like the medicine was effective, but because someone wants the medicine back (probably the Japanese), they cannot give it to Ya Tou anymore.

1

The next day, as Xinyue and Ya Tou go out to shop, Ya Tou suddenly gets especially ill, puking blood. This worries Er Ye tremendously as he escorts her back home. He then realizes that Jiu Ye is out of town and there is no more medicine left at home. He brings Ya Tou with him under the rain toward Fu Ye’s house to ask for medicine. He pleads for long hours with no results.  (This honestly broke my heart a bit).

1

3 27

When finally Fu Ye shows up, it is to tell him that he cannot give him back the medicine. Fu Ye feels bad for what he is saying but a flashback shows that it was all because Ya Tou asked him to do so earlier.

9

14 15

Finally, Er Ye and Ya Tou leaves for home. Ya Tou is sick, but still tries to do house chore. Ya Tou asks Er Ye if they can go out to eat a bowl of her favorite Chinese onion noodle dish. However, all the restaurants are close at this hour. Er Ye yells as much as he can, but without any result. The both of them stay together outside. As Er Ye cries and Ya Tou wishes him to live happy, she dies.

29

The next day, Er Ye comes to Fu Ye’s house with a sword. He blames him for the death of his wife and wants revenge. As he throws his sword in his direction, Fu Ye does not hide from its trajectory and does get hurt on the neck. Xinyue arrives to stop them. They tell Er Ye to first properly bury Ya Tou before asking for revenge.

3

At the funeral of Ya Tou, Jiu Ye arrives to give his respect to the decease. He also gives a handwritten letter of Ya Tou to Er Ye explaining all the plans: she was actually at the last phase of her illness, the medicine was not working, she gave back the medicine to Fu Ye and she wishes him to be happy whatever happens. Er Ye cries…

1425

At the same time, Er Ye’s disciple (the dude crazy in love with Ya Tou) gets out of the hospital to hear the bad news: Ya Tou is dead.

6

The episode ends with Er Ye going to a brothel to drink and forget his sorrow. Ba Ye comes to stop him, to no avail.

-end of episode 16-

I am shocked to see our second female lead already dead at episode 16. I thought she had a bigger role to play!! It feels like since Zhao Liying made her appearance in the drama (at episode 10), the story is moving at a faster pace. These four episodes were full of great scenes so I strongly recommend you to go watch them! A lot of moments that were impossible to catch through a screenshot. From now on, I think that the drama will focus on uniting the other members to recreate the “The Mystic Nine/Old Nine Gates” group and they will start exploring tombs together. No idea when my next recaps are going to be, so see you next time! ~~

I want to watch it so bad but it won’t let me so I keep watching the previews hoping some nice person would recap and here you are😘😘 I love hje bromance and FY and XY are so cute together (the power of ZLY!!) and can I say, the fighting scenes arr RIDICULOUS. Its alway 30 against 1 anyways, William is pretty so all is forgiven and his body is beautiful 😍 and the scene with Lay is the rain was A. Beautifully shot and B. He did amazing and when YT died I cried(saw via Insta hahaha) why do they always go to brothels? The disciple needs help!! And Im so shocked she died because she’s on the poster and we have like 32 more eps unless, they are planning on bringing a YT doppleganger in future eps but besides that, I can’t wait to meet the other members I hope the show keeps up the momentum

    • ❤ Haha, I am that nice person 😉 It took me all night yesterday to watch, compile pictures and write this review. I am so dedicated (self pat)
Haha, the fighting scenes make no sense. How can the rest of the world be that weak?! His body is jaw dropping ❤ ❤ OMG, so handsome I smile just thinking of him~~ lalala
Yah, the episodes was all fun about the OTP, but paf! episode 16 is full of tension and sadness. Brothel is the worst place to go. Considering how much he loved his wife, I thought that brothel scene was totally unnecessary… v_v sigh.
Love that scene of Er Ye begging in the rain.. His best acting scene so far!
Exactly, it is way too early! LOL, they are bringing doppelganger? I hate that kind of addition to the story 😦 Ruins it because I can't ship them together since it is like betraying the wife's memory…
Yeah same! Curious to see who are the remaining five members of the group!

William knows what he’s doing everybody 😂😂😂I kept replaying that rain scene and yes, the way they made his character going to a brothel makes no sense. Going to the beach or even in the middle of the woods makes more sense than the brothel and I hate when they bring the doppleganger UNLESS she really didn’t die either way, I can’t wait to see what happens next

        Like

      • Obviously! 😀 I think this is the most fitting role for him ever! He looks good at any angles. 8D
For the brothel scene, it felt like the producers thought: “This is the only chance to make Lay look like a bad boy!” Yeah, total nonsense… Shakes head.
Haha, it would be the best if she didn’t die. But again, I don’t think her character intents to plan something so complicated, especially if it seperates her from her husband. Ya Tou is a fictional character (doesn’t exist in the novels I think), so curious to see what her future holds.

It didn’t make him look like a bad boy, so they failed 😂😂 I might read the novels during or after the show😀 I really like her but idk how they’ll bring her back *fingers cross that it will be epic*

Huh, hold up! Am I missing something here? When William was seated, healing his wounds, you can see that he doesn’t have any tattoos. But when he was standing, talking face-to-face with Li Ying, you can see that he has a huge tattoo of a dragon. I can’t imagine the production making such a big continuity blunder so there’s gotta be a reasonable explanation. Maybe I should just watch the entire episode and not ask stupid questions. Apparently, William’s hotness did not distract me enough.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the beautiful screen captures of all the beautiful people! I can watch William watch paint dry all day long.

    • Ann says:

The explanation is that… his family is known for tattooing that creature (that protects against evil), which is only activated by heat. So, after Li Ying helps him clean his wound using a hot towel, it appears out of nowhere 🙂

      Like

      • Annie says:

Oh, okay…that explains it. I guess there were no showers back then so the producers couldn’t sneak in a gratuitous shower scene for us fans. A tattoo scene works for me! Or it’s in the novel?

Note to self: wait to watch the subbed episode before making any comments. 🙂

Haha, and I was apparently too focused on uploading William's hot scene pictures that I forgot to write about this detail. Yes, as Ann answered, this is a mysterious tattoo that everyone in the Zhang family has: it appears when in contact with heat. 🙂

      • During that scene, Xinyue is taking care of Fu Ye’s wound. Once again, Fu Ye brings up the fact that he lives a dangerous life. He is very sorry for bringing her in his life and she should leave. That’s pretty much it :’D That was enough to put both of them in deep thoughts 😛 I don’t remember a hand offering scene though…

btw,so i love being in this room, cause we talking about the same actor we loved..

    • Zhao Liying asked why he comes all the time like it is his house when Fu Ye is trying to heal his wound. To this, Ba Ye of course said he is very sorry. Xinyue then rushed him to leave saying she will not accompany him to the door. Fu Ye looks at the scene without a word. XD

I may have missed some of he language subtleties of the conversation between FY and XY but essentially:-

      1. XY saw the fresh wounds on his back and realized that it came from his whip fight with PSB. She asks him why didn’t he say hat it hurt on the train and now she realizes he too is human and not some deity that was unscathed from the duel.
      2. He also tells her that clearly he is a man of battle and his fate is as such. She on the other hand is different as she was born into a wealthy family and should immediately return to Beiping to distance herself from all these.

These episodes rocked! WC and ZLY really do have good chemistry and XY really humanises FY. Loved how:-
    1. Determined FY was to rid all the men standing in his way in the train to rescue XY from the clutches of PSP ; the fight scenes are well choreographed showcases for the male leads – milk bottles as weapons? 🙂
    2. FY would ask XY in a polite tone if she was okay after each rescue (despite the obvious physical exertions and eyes-lock-moment – in the train and in his study)
    3. That they showed FY too was wounded in he encounter but just that he puts up with he pain and not that he was unscathed
    4. How FY was sneaking a look at her in the carriage from the hotel to the train station in Beiping and got caught out by XY
    5. FY was unable to concentrate on his books and just tossed them aside coz he was thinking about XY – that’s his moment of contemplation you captured in the gif above so cutely!
    6. How on point ZLY is in this role. Just the right amount of cute, sass, fan-girling, sa jiao and girlie bravado roles into one!

2-3. He is such a (dreamy) gentleman!
      4. SO CUTEE!! ><
      5. By the way, I love how good looking he is when he looks serious!
      6. Yoh, the girl is raw talent! She is so spot on with this role and it is really different (in my opinion) from her previous ones. Not a hint of Mary Sue left. Perfection!

Don’t forget when FY asks the housekeeper to ask XY to come join him for dinner/instruct him that XY can have dinner and doesn’t need to wait for him? Also, when he follows up asking where she is/where she went and looking worried when the housekeeper said she went by the train station a couple times 🙂

ZLY is perfection! I love that she takes on different roles effortlessly and WC is pure eye candy 😉

Hahaha. I guess it’s not exactly a role that expands one’s acting repertoire but she and WC together, combustible!! He definitely benefits from having her around. I wonder how much of the script was adjusted to accommodate their storyline – I never read the stories or watch Lost Tomb (allergic to LYF and YY).

It seems that Lay is really popular being a K-pop idol but I really think that it’s the ZLY-WC combo that’s driving the ratings this week!

Didn’t watch LOZ – saw the trailer and the horrific CGI scared me away and am now obsessed trawling YouTube for BTS and interaction videos of ZLY and WC!

      • Ann says:

I’m guessing a lot of the script was modified cause she wasn’t supposed to have this role. FY’s wife wasn’t supposed to have a big role at all. LYF’s acting is lacking, but I can’t deny YY’s looks~

I don’t think Lay appeared in the episodes showing on TV this week (episodes 9-12) so it’s def ZLY and WC driving the ratings 🙂

Same here, Legend of Zu looked horrible from the get-go. Couldn’t watch it, I tried reading reviews/recaps and knowing what happened/the ending turned me off (it would make me so sad to see WC with another girl doing that even onscreen, I don’t think I can handle it!)

        They are cute, eh?!

But in general, I watch for the ZLY+WC pairing… I wonder if Mystic Nine is going to become the representative drama of the summer. Joke on you, Hunan, for neglecting Zhu Xian!!

I think Stay With Me, maybe Ice Fantasy (weird airing schedule – sunday, monday, and tuesday?), Zhu Xian, and Just a Smile is Alluring will achieve high ratings too. But, we’ll have to wait and see 😉

I am not too worried cause it’s already doing so well, way better than I expected! Zhu Xian, though, it doesn’t have the prime airtime that’s been given to Ice Fantasy. Given the popularity of the leads and the quality of the production, it should be okay. Ice Fantasy probably needs the prime timeslot more cause there doesn’t seem to be a lot of buzz around it and the leads aren’t that popular as compared to Wang Kai/Joe Chen, Yang Yang/Zheng Shuang, and Li Yifeng/Zhao Liying. I feel like Hunan TV probably knows Zhu Xian will do well regardless of the timeslot and that’s why it’s trying to promote Ice Fantasy more. Plus, the amount of CGI effects and Lord of the Rings styling will either really appeal to Chinese viewers or repel them so that’s why I think a lot of promotional work has been done for Ice Fantasy (to prepare the public LOL) making it seem like Zhu Xian is being neglected but it will also do well like The Mystic Nine did (with no promo). Stay With Me is a guaranteed hit, I think. But, the direct competitor in the same time slot for The Mystic Nine is Ice Fantasy.

      • Yeah, true, there are a lot of big dramas coming soon! Stay With Me could be a hit, but it looks so generic that it is hard to say if it will catch people’s attention enough. Remember last year’s Destinated to Love You? It also starred Chen Qiao En, scripted by Tong Hua and at the end, it did well without being exceptional. Of course, Wang Kai could change the game with his immense popularity!
Yang Yang and Zheng Shuang’s drama is the one I look out the most for, even more than for Zhu Xian. I need that romance in my life!! >< Ice Fantasy and Zhu Xian both have chances to do well ratings wise, but I am pretty sure no other dramas can beat Mystic Nine when it comes to online attention 8D Will see what the future holds for us!

I’m looking forward to Stay With Me and Zhu Xian. Other than ZLY, Joe Chen is the one actress I really like watching. I feel like all her dramas do well even though none of them are truly exceptional, she plays the same role always, but she’s so likeable that I’ll still watch. I did see Destined to Love You, only the first little bit though, I enjoyed it.

As much as I like Yang Yang, I can’t stand Zheng Shuang’s acting and lack of facial expressions. I’ll probably still check it out for YY! Ice Fantasy is coming out in 2 days so we’ll see really soon how The Mystic Nine fares against it 🙂

I loved her in all her Taiwanese dramas in the past, but I wish she would grow out of the stereotypical teenager romance dramas. Hope Stay With You will have a bit more dimension because if not, it is a total waste of the cast!!
Yes!! I never though of ZS as an exceptional actress, but based on the stills, I am sure she will do very fine. The story sounds awesome and makes me wonder if all female gamers are that pretty? Or is that more of a guy fantasy xD
I want to check out Ice Fantasy first episode because based on the trailers, I didn’t understand much what was going on. Hopefully drama will be clearer 😛

Based on what I have seen of him on Nirvana in Fire and Ode To Joy, I think he is good, but far from his two other bros (Hu Ge and Jin Dong). Well, that is enough qualifications for Stay With Me which wants to be a more teenager drama.
It should be airing for mid-August of 2016 on HunanTV.

I think FY likes her already, but he is too worried for her safety to aknowledge it. They are definitely going to become a couple as I saw in a trailer that he *spoiler* proposed to her. I think he wouldn’t give her the precious bracelet if he didn’t genuinely care for her.

Wang Kai has a lot of avid and even rabid fans after Nirvana, Disguiser and Love Me IYD. He has been in the industry for over ten years. He’s a solid actor for a specific range of roles. He’s uncomfortable with easygoing, playful or carefree characters, though that may change over time.

This drama is strangely addicting. I am all team Fo Ye. He is street smart, calm, scholarly, and kick ass as a hero. I am sold as soon as he entered the train station. Lol, can’t help to root for a handsome man. I love his chemistry via bickering with XY.

I am not quite sold on Er Ye’s arch. Despite, the show wants me to root for him and his wife. The show beated us in the head with how deep their loves, yet I can’t see much chemisty. Maybe YT is too passive not much sass, that i found her character was boring. Somehow, I am glad that Madamn passed away. We can finally move on with the story. Er Ye finally can show case his skills, I hope.

Anyway, I am glad to find this site, and enjoy reading everyone comments. Someone to spazz with. Just curious, had anyone read the novel? I heard the ending wasn’t very happy. This worries me.

    • Same! A genuine smile drew on my face as soon as I saw him on episode one. My favorite scenes are of this couple, their everyday bickerings are the best!
Er Ye’s arch is not that bad and I personnally do like Ya Tou. She is boring, but so nice to everyone. Her voice was amazing too. It is true I didn’t see much chemistry between them. Furthermore, it sucks that we didn’t see much of the powerful Er Yue Hong and instead got him just smiling and standing around. Hope his role gets more active in the later episodes!
As someone who reads all the comments, I don’t remember someone saying that they read the Mystic Nine novels yet :/ The drama deviates from the novel though as both female leads didn’t have much roles in the original book.

There is not enough Fo Ye to go around here with all these bromances. =D. I am not quite understand what Jiu Ye wrote to the Chamber of Commerce to pull the bidding plug?

Just curious, how is the rating in this drama?

Sign me up for Team Fo Ye too! Kudos to the fashion team at Mystic Nine – who knew WC could look so good??!

I remember reading a blog which said that WC was pretty good too in Legend of Fragrance as the second male lead in his republican outfits – anyone saw that? I couldn’t get past ep1 with my double allergy to LYF and TY !

Zhu Xian may have been delayed to Aug 8th. Aug 2nd date was mentioned as the broadcast date before Aug 8th. Aug 8th is still not set in stone.
